THE FIRM Brabners is regarded as a market leader in its specialist fields. Clients include larger corporate clients and plcs, banks and institutions, SMEs, and owners and managers of private businesses, as well as public sector bodies, charities and not-for-profit organisations. Many high-net-worth individuals also instruct the firm. As one of the only business-led North West focused practices the firm believes it is uniquely placed to exploit the evolving provision of legal services outside London.

PRINCIPAL AREAS OF WORK

Corporate:
The corporate team, which is amongst the largest in the North West continues to be busy acting for organisations regionally, nationally and internationally and the Market IQ (Experian) tables shows Brabners as the most prolific law firm for North West deals in 2014 and also 12th in the UK as a whole. Winners of Legal Team of the Year at Insider’s North West Dealmakers Awards 2013, Brabners corporate team has a strong track record in the mid-market acting for entrepreneurs, private companies, SMEs, OMBs, small private equity houses and AIM listed companies.

Commercial Property: The commercial property team is one of the largest real estate teams in the North West with dedicated professionals covering a wide range of commercial real estate matters. The team is capable of providing fast and efficient property advice for multi-site operators, advising on the use of alternate funding structures and complex development transactions. Brabners has recently worked on a broad range of transactions in the housing, leisure, office, student development, renewables and retail sectors and have a client base comprising blue chip companies, banks, local authorities, pension funds, entrepreneurs, individuals and property developers.

Employment & Pensions: With a wealth of corporate experience and expertise, the employment and pensions team acts primarily for employers on the full spectrum of contentious and non-contentious employment issues which arise from recruitment through to the termination of employment. The firm has seen the successful amalgamation of the employment and pension team in 2014; creating one of the largest multi-disciplinary employment law teams in the region. The team is a recognised industry leader in Agency Workers Regulations.

Commercial Litigation: The commercial litigation team is one of the largest in the North West to have a solely commercial, rather than insurance, client base. It covers all areas of commercial litigation with specialist expertise in banking, pensions, media, construction, insolvency, regulatory matters, sports, contentious probate and shareholder disputes as well as property disputes of all kinds. Members of the team have extensive experience of all types of dispute resolution, including court proceedings, arbitration, mediation, adjudication, and expert determination and tribunal work.

Charity: Brabners’ charity team continues to develop and has enjoyed a strong year, with many new client wins and significant instructions across the North West and increasing work coming from London, finding that clients are keen to secure legal services at lower hourly rates outside of the Capital. The department’s focus is exclusively on the voluntary sector but this does extend to schools, academies, Parochial Church Councils, registered providers and social enterprises. Work ranges from governance issues, mergers, incorporations, the establishment of new charities but also more contentious issues including trustee disputes and the exercise by the Charity Commission of its regulatory functions.

Private Client: The private client team is by far the largest dedicated operation in the North West and continues to grow in terms of client base and revenue. The team’s enviable reputation is second to none and is such that clients and intermediaries often seek out members of the team to deal with their sensitive and complex private client legal needs. The team has built on the launch of its Business Succession Unit in 2012 and strives to continue to adapt to market requirements by delivering innovative and cost effective planning solutions to clients.

Housing & Regeneration: The housing and regeneration department is a recognised leader in the sector and offers the largest dedicated team in the North West. It provides a comprehensive service to clients ranging from the largest housing associations with nationwide stock to small housing co-operatives. The team provides cutting edge commercially driven solutions to the challenges facing the sector.
