Corporate Taxation: With a predominant tax focus, Old Square Tax Chambers covers all aspects of corporate taxation, both in and out of court. The team has particular strengths in advising on corporate reconstructions, entrepreneurs, and employee remuneration strategies.
VAT: Tax Chambers expertise in VAT has been enhanced by the arrival of Etienne Wong, formerly head of VAT at Clifford Chance. The team advises on all aspects of VAT, with particular focus on supply issues (non-supplies, composite supplies), cross-border issues, property transactions, transactions in the telecommunications, technology, energy and transport sectors, and structured finance products (including Islamic financing products).

Specialist Expertise: Each member of chambers cover all areas of tax law, however each practitioner has particular specialties: Head of Chambers, James Kessler QC has particular strengths in foreign domiciliaries, trusts and charities. Robert Venables QC focuses on trusts, EU law, offshore and international taxation, employee remuneration, owner-managed companies and VAT. He has extensive litigation experience before the House of Lords (Supreme Court), Privy Council, European Court of Justice and Court of Appeal, including tax-related judicial review. Amanda Hardy QC is a noted expert on pensions taxation and a highly experienced litigator. Before taking silk in 2015, Amanda was listed as a leading junior tax barrister. Philip Simpson QC advises across a broad range of taxes, with a particular focus on corporation tax and offshore situations involving individuals. He has extensive litigation expertise, in particular in VAT and other indirect taxes. Patrick Cannon is an expert on SDLT and also advises on the GAAR, tax investigations, and human rights in tax. Etienne Wong is an expert on VAT (including VAT litigation), and also advises on property development and investment transactions. Rory Mullan advises widely on offshore issues with a particular interest in the impact of EU law and human rights law in relation to tax. He has enjoyed significant recent success representing taxpayers before the Courts. Setu Kamal specialises in all areas of tax law, with clients ranging from the big four to provincial firms. Harriet Brown is dual qualified as a Jersey advocate and regularly appears before UK and Jersey tribunals. Oliver Marre represents taxpayers on direct tax matters, with an interest in employment taxation and NICs.
