Alex Carruthers specialises in complex divorces and financial remedy cases, particularly with international clients. His clients are high net worth individuals with complex legal issues, including trusts and jurisdictional disputes. He also acts in complicated children’s cases with international elements.
Alex helped set up the Young Solicitors Family Law Association in 1998 and is a qualified mediator and collaborative lawyer. He is a member of Resolution, the International Bar Association and a fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
Alex is a graduate of Cambridge University. He was a trainee solicitor at Bates Wells and Braithwaite and made a partner in 1999. He was a founding partner of Hughes Fowler Carruthers. Alex is commended by Chambers 2018 for his "extensive experience in high net worth divorce issues", whilst Chambers 2017 states that he is a "very astute tactician who is outstanding in every aspect" and Chambers 2016 describe his “really good breadth of knowledge” and his “superb service”, with clients stating that he is “measured, calm and has the ability to see round corners”. Chambers 2015 comments that he is “one of the leading lights in the family law arena”. He is also highly regarded in other legal directories. He regularly lectures and comments on family law in relation to trusts and ultra-high net worth cases. He has been involved in numerous reported cases and land mark decisions and currently acts for a number of ultra-high net worth individuals involved in complex proceedings in the High Court with satellite litigation around the world. He has been involved in numerous reported areas exploring the boundaries of this area of the law.
