Department profile submitted by Oraro & Company Advocates
For over four decades we have built a reputation as a market leader in disputes, working on some of Kenya’s biggest disputes and contributing to Kenyan jurisprudence. For instance we successfully represented Standard Chartered in the case of Intercom v. Standard Chartered (a landmark Kenyan case in banking law and illegality). Our areas of specialty include banking and finance, construction, manufacturing, not-for-profits, PPP and telecommunications. We represent large local, regional and international organizations in complex, high-value commercial and tax disputes. We are also a go-to firm for high profile constitutional cases. We also offer clients ADR solutions, to mitigate cost and time spent in disputes.
In May 2015, we made a significant lateral hire – bringing on one of the country’s young and upcoming tax experts – Lena Onchwari (Senior Associate). Lena, who holds a LLM in International European Tax law has brought great tax expertise to the firm’s tax team, which is led by the firm’s Senior Partner George Oraro SC who in March, 2017 was inducted into the LSK’s Roll of Honour. Our firm is known for having one of the largest dispute resolution teams, with 14 qualified lawyers including two of its recent 2017 lateral hires Gibran Khalid Darr (Senior Associate) and Sandra Kavagi (Associate). Gibran (formerly of Tariq Khan and Associates Advocates) and Sandra (formerly of Lutta and Company Advocates) have both significantly bolstered the firm’s capacity in the area.
