Litigation & Dispute Resolution:
Straits Law Practice’s dispute resolution practice group is headed by N Sreenivasan SC, with Palaniappan Sundararaj as his deputy.
The partners in the litigation practice group have specialist expertise in specific practice areas, which allows the firm to offer quality counsel to lead cases in commercial litigation, corporate and banking/financial litigation, criminal law, medical and professional negligence, shareholder disputes, insolvency and restructuring, construction, real estate, employment and other areas.
N Sreenivasan, SC practises across all dispute resolution and arbitration areas, working closely with the practice heads and their teams. Sreeni handles high value commercial disputes, complex corporate litigation, arbitration and white-collar crime cases. He has acted in varied cases such as a international arbitration involving a US$560 million brewery, shareholder disputes and corruption cases. He recently concluded a high profile case involving criminal breach of trust in the sum of $24 million in relation to a mega church in Singapore. S Balamurugan, who runs the criminal practice of the firm, often assists Sreeni in complex criminal matters.
Valerie Ang leads the arbitration practice, with Shankar AS. The arbitration team has successfully conducted arbitrations in Singapore, Myanmar and the United States in diverse fields, from trade finance disputes to commodities-related disputes, hospitality disputes, construction disputes and multi-million dollar arbitrations.
Banking & Finance:
Led by Executive Chairman, M Rajaram, the banking and finance practice works with the majority of Indian banks with a presence in Singapore. Besides having extensive experience in structuring complex syndications and project financing within Singapore and the rest of the world, Straits Law also has significant experience in advising financial institutions and foreign banks on regulatory and licensing matters. Ahmad Khalis brings specialised Islamic banking knowledge as well as a good grounding in general banking law to the table.
Corporate & Real Estate:
Led by Chan Lai Foong, the team’s key strength is in its substantial experience and expertise in domestic and cross-border transactions. The team has the necessary knowledge and experience to effectively manage the substantial complexities of a multi-jurisdictional M&A deal.
Building & Construction:
Straits Law’s building and construction law practice provides both advisory services to clients as well as manages disputes for clients. The team is headed by Joseph Liow who has represented a wide range of clients in the construction industry, including the Building Control Authority of Singapore, developers, main contractors, suppliers and sub-contractors since 1995. The team is well placed to manage and assist clients in adjudication matters under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act.
Joseph Liow and Valerie Ang lead the firm’s employment practice group. The firm has conducted or been involved in facilitating company directed inquiries into employees’ misconduct, breach of confidentiality obligations, breach of legislation and regulations; and regularly collaborates with HR departments in relation to compliance with internal policies, local legislation and regulations.
Led by M Rajaram, the India practice group actively advises a wide spectrum of clients both within Singapore and in the region who are looking towards India to further their business interests as well as clients from India who are looking to do business in Singapore and the region.
Matrimonial & Probate:
The matrimonial and probate practice group, including Syariah law matters, is headed by Stuart A. Palmer and Ahmad Nizam. The team advises clients on matters ranging from prenuptial agreements, maintenance for children and wife, separation, divorce, custody of children and division of matrimonial assets and in cross border custody disputes. The team has acted in cases involving very high value matrimonial assets as well as complex mixed religious matrimonial cases.
Restructuring & Insolvency:
Straits Law’s insolvency practice group is headed by Muralli Rajaram. The firm has developed a strong practice in insolvency having acted for a wide variety of clients including liquidators or creditors looking to swell the pool of assets or debtors hoping to restructure.
