Established in 1990, ‘The Law Counsel’ is an international law firm based in Bangladesh which is widely recognised as one of the leading firms in the country. It was founded by Mr. Abdur Razzaq, currently the senior partner of the firm and in the year of its inception had only two associates. Arbitration:

Lawyers from The Law Counsel have been involved in arbitration proceedings both as arbitrators and counsel. The firm successfully defended the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation against a claim for damages for failure to accept delivery of petroleum products. It has also successfully represented a Malaysian company in a multi-million dollar international commercial arbitration. The firm has extensive experience of dealing with litigation arising out of arbitration proceedings, and is currently involved in enforcing an ICC award against the Bangladesh Power Development Board.

Banking & Finance:
During the last year, the firm handled close to 50 deals, advising on legal aspects of the loan transactions, including executing international commercial agreements and investment contracts drafting, arranging syndicated financing and scrutinising and verifying security and property documentation. The firm has a large banking practice and acts as legal adviser to many commercial banks and business houses and has special expertise in Shariah based financing. Recently, the firm represented the country’s leading private bank with regard to an investment of more than USD 20 million under a syndicated finance arrangement for the construction of a mega power plant.

Employment & Labour:
The firm has a substantial employment and labour practice in Bangladesh and regularly drafts employment contracts for both foreign and local companies and examines pre-drafted contracts for compliance with Bangladesh law.
