Private Wealth Law — Wyoming

Band 1

Dray, Dyekman, Reed & Healey, P.C.

From the HNW guide

Long-standing Cheyenne law firm Dray Dyekman has a strong business transactional practice in Wyoming, and many of its corporate clients are family-owned businesses. The estate planning and administration lawyers help these business owners to plan for succession and manage their personal wealth. A significant number of the firm's estate planning clients are farmers and ranchers, and the lawyers can act for landowning clients on mineral rights matters and oil and gas leases. The firm also advises clients on setting up Wyoming business entities and trust structures.

Notable practitioners

Gregory Dyekman has a broad practice, with a significant estate planning component for landowners, business owners and those with inherited wealth. "He's very personable and just very well connected and service-oriented," enthuses one fellow attorney, adding: "It's amazing the volunteer work he does and the time he dedicates to charitable work. People appreciate that – he's not just talking about it, he's doing it and living it. He's very service-oriented and people connect to that."

Band 1

From the HNW guide

Hirst Applegate is a Cheyenne law firm with a broad-based practice for Wyoming clients and those doing business in the state. The firm's estate planning offering is a key aspect of its services for Wyomingite clients, particularly working professionals. Since Wyoming has no state estate or gift taxes, the estate planning attorneys at Hirst Applegate are typically called on to assist with income tax planning and to help clients plan the distribution of their assets to the next generation. Its lawyers specialise in trusts structuring and trust and estate administration.

Notable practitioners

John Metzke has significant expertise in corporate and real estate matters, but he has a particular focus on trusts and estates and it is this work that makes up the bulk of his practice. His client base is predominantly Wyoming-based but he does work with out-of-state clients as well. He advises on trusts and estates planning and administration matters.

Long Reimer Winegar Beppler LLP

From the HNW guide

"I would say the firm that probably has the largest footprint in high net worth work is Long Reimer Winegar Beppler," reports one source. "All four of the name partners do a lot of HNW business, particularly in the estate and business planning area. Over the years, the reason they've got that position is they're more tax-oriented in their planning than most, so they've been in a position to help people with more esoteric sorts of planning. They have a long-standing reputation in the tax area that separates them from anybody else I know in Wyoming."

Long Reimer Winegar Beppler has trusts and estates specialists in all three of its Wyoming offices, in Jackson, Cheyenne and Evanston, and it also has branches in Denver, CO, and Park City, UT.

Notable practitioners

Thomas Long is based in Cheyenne and is the firm's senior member. A source says Long has "always been very highly regarded" in the Wyoming trusts and estates community, describing him as a "very creative thinker, and one of those people who has the ability to break down something complex to a strategy that's workable." Another interviewee reports that "Tom does more sophisticated estate planning for really high net worth individuals – he doesn't shy away from those challenges, and he really is the person that most people refer their clients to if they have big tax-sensitive estate planning problems."

Christopher Reimer is based in Jackson, which is the key centre for Wyoming's growing private trust company market. Reimer is recognised for his expertise in setting up and administering private trust companies, usually for out-of-state and international clients. One interviewee says Reimer has "built a great practice in the Jackson Hole area," adding that he has "a lot of international expertise" in trusts and estates work.

Cheyenne-based Natalie Winegar is the firm's managing partner. Winegar practises trusts and estates law, as well as real estate and natural resources. She also represents many physicians and healthcare professionals. Wyoming sources highlight Winegar's "large client base" of high net worth clients and the "high-level" work she is involved with.

From the Chambers HNW guide

Robert Leonard is a partner at the Laramie firm of Prehoda, Leonard & Edwards, LLC. He's also a frequent speaker – he's a member of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and has been for a long time. He's hard-working and intent on doing a great job for his clients."
