Profile

Practice Areas: A partner based in Manchester, with a national role, in the litigation team and specialising in advice and litigation of all indirect taxes including VAT, customs duty, excise duties, hydrocarbon oils, landfill tax and aggregates levy. Has worked with clients in a wide variety of industry areas which include manufacturing, housing, telecommunications, local authorities, financial services and food and drink industries and has represented clients at all stages of the court structure up to and including the Court of Justice of the European Union. Notable cases include Med Hotels Ltd, Helena Housing Ltd, Asda Stores Ltd and Gabem Marketing Ltd.

Professional Memberships: Law Society; Associate of the Institute of Indirect Taxation; Member of the VAT Practitioners Group.

Career: Joined the Solicitor’s Office of HM Customs and Excise as an Executive Officer in 1989 and later became a Trainee Solicitor. Qualified in 1999 on joining Kent Jones and Done to undertake commercial litigation before moving back into indirect tax litigation in an in-house role in KPMG LLP in 2000. Moved to McGrigors LLP in 2006 to develop their national indirect tax litigation practice and became a partner in 2008. Joined PwC Legal’s tax litigation team as partner in 2011 to further develop their nationwide practice.

Publications: David is a regular speaker at tax conferences and seminars and a frequent contributor to the Tax Journal and De Voil’s Indirect Tax Intelligence.

Personal: Born 10th August 1967. Married with two children. Leisure interests include Stoke City FC, classic cars, travel, gardening and reading.
