Practice Areas

James Campbell focuses his practice on civil litigation and the defense of catastrophic product liability, toxic tort, medical device, pharmaceutical and negligence matters throughout the US. One of the firm’s principal trial attorneys, Mr. Campbell is responsible for supervising and coordinating litigation for the firm throughout the country. Mr. Campbell has tried cases in 15 different states, and has tried over 100 cases.

Professional Memberships

Mr. Campbell is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and he also serves as the Vice Chair of the Jury Committee and as a member of the Massachusetts State Committee. He is a past president of the International Association of Defense Counsel. Mr. Campbell was the director of the 2005 IADC Trial Academy and served on the faculty of the 1997 IADC Trial Academy. Mr. Campbell will be the 2015 Dean of the IADC Corporate Counsel College. Mr. Campbell is a Diplomate of the American Board of Trial Advocates, served on its national board of directors, and is a past president of the Massachusetts Chapter of ABOTA. He has twice served on the Defense Research Institute’s board of directors. He served as the director of the 2003 ABA National Trial Academy, the 2001 faculty, and will serve on the 2014 faculty. Mr. Campbell is a former President of the Massachusetts Defense Lawyers Association. He is also a member of the Product Liability Advisory Council, Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, and the Association of Defense Trial Lawyers. Mr. Campbell is recognized by The Legal 500 and Chambers USA as a nationwide Leading Lawyer for Product Liability and Mass Tort Defense.

Career

James Campbell is the President of Campbell Campbell Edwards & Conroy, where he has worked his entire career. Mr. Campbell is admitted to the state and federal courts in Massachusetts, Florida, Maine and New Hampshire. He is also admitted to the federal courts of those states and those in Connecticut, Vermont, US Supreme Court and the First and Eleventh Circuits.  

Publications

Mr. Campbell is the co-author of a Defense Research Institute monograph regarding the duty to warn, and the author of a chapter concerning the discoverability of post-accident design changes in product liability actions for the DRI’s Pre-Trial Handbook. As an editor and contributing author, he assisted in producing two chapters for the DRI’s 50-state compendium of defenses to product liability cases. He has lectured on products liability at many national seminars and before trade associations.  

Personal

Mr. Campbell received his JD from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1983 and a BA, magna cum laude, from Boston College in 1980.
