Bankruptcy/Restructuring - Texas

THE FIRM This firm's Dallas-based bankruptcy team has experienced a stellar year at a time when traditional bankruptcy filings have been low on the ground. The team mirrors the firm's national focus and exemplary reputation in representing creditors and creditors’ committees, with a strong localized niche in the oil and gas industry. Clients appreciate that the team is able to draw on the firm's abundant resources in other areas of law. Highlights include representing the official noteholders' committee in the Chapter 11 proceedings of mortgage company RE Loans. The group also acted for the official equity holders committee in the now concluded Chapter 11 bankruptcy of Seahawk Drilling.

Sources say: "A well-integrated practice." "An excellent team, from trial attorneys to 'nuts and bolts' bankruptcy attorneys. I haven't had a case with them that has turned out badly."

KEY INDIVIDUALS Charles Gibbs has fast built a reputation as one of the premier bankruptcy practitioners in the state, and is praised as "a master of his craft." He is equally described as an advocate who "brings a lot of credibility to the table" in court, and as "a great strategist who can provide a good road map for how the case will progress." He led the firm's representation of committees in both the RE Loans and Seahawk Drilling Chapter 11 bankruptcies.

Up-and-coming attorney Sarah Schultz is "effective in the business side of the restructurings and very knowledgeable on the Bankruptcy Code and procedure." She has recently acted for a number of committees in various New York-based bankruptcy proceedings. Clients note that Schultz has "impressed judges with her knowledge and fluency, which is helpful in establishing credibility."

Key clients include Element Power, FelCor Lodging Trust and MeriStar Hospitality.

Sources say: "They're wonderfully helpful."

KEY INDIVIDUALS Sources laud Carl Lee's ability to "take a complex legal issue and break it down into bite-size pieces." He recently represented renewable energy project developer Element Power in the sale of a 14,000 acre Texas wind power project.

Randall Ratner has a wealth of experience in real estate-related matters, and recently acted for Behringer Harvard REIT on the $340 million financing of a seven-property portfolio.
